Houston Tax Protest: We took turns working on the presentation and gathering the facts. We were able to get the assessed value reduced substantially. Yaay! If you want any pointers, give me a call.

Back-Flip: Watching Cami for these eight years has cultivated in me a strange new attitude towards my body. I was standing backwards on a starting block at the neighborhood pool, visualizing a back-dive (also learned from Cami), when I realized intuitively that I just needed a little more lift-off and a little less fear and to turn the back-dive into a back-flip.

My first two attempts weren't terrific; there was some minor associated pain, but it wasn't enough to warrant the fear that I'd associated with jumping backwards. I could easily do this! With a little more concentration there wouldn't be any pain.

I stood on the block with the cool breeze blowing across my wet swim-suit and let my body fly, dismissing fear, and inviting the water to embrace me, feet first. In the air, I cataloged the physical motion, requiring my muscles to remember the proper trajectory. I watched my feet enter the water first, extending them and throwing my hands up in a celebratory Y, like a gymnast upon completion of a tricky routine.

Who knew that I would be 'd doing my first back-flip at age 30?

Much Awsomeness at the Family Reunion in Crockett | Posted by benjamin on 15 Aug 2010
Pics: Crockett Reunion July 2010

July 2010

Too much time has passed for me to post any breathtakingly funny comments. I can say that we missed Brad, Dad, Mom, and the Ho family. I’ve felt reminded about how lucky I am to be a part of this magnificent group.

In resumé, I enjoyed the conversations, the mosh-pit of cousins in Ed and Alisha’s living room, the trading of parenting tips with Jeremy during the fishing trip, listening to silly songs, and watching everyone cram together into the tiny church building. (I think my kids all prefer sitting with Uncle Wayne.) I can’t remember such a captive audience for fire-juggling and glow-stick hula dancing. However, just as a reminder, the best part of the reunion was my utter domination of Ticket to Ride. All aboard! (Too bad Cameron was all tired out from all the Airbender action at the swimming hole.)

If you remember things differently, or would like to embellish something, please do by adding comments on HewettFam to this post. I’ve also attached photos. Thanks to LeeAnn’s waterproof camera, you’ll see evidence of my Kung Fu training.

Abominable Oak Leaves | Posted by benjamin on 07 Mar 2010
Pics: Abominable Oak Leaves

Yesterday I began yard work at 10:30 am and finished at 1:10 pm. Today I’m tired and sore. And I don’t even have 22 acres. I had to bag the lawn clippings since our lawn had a fungus and the dying grass needs better exposure to the sun to regrow. It doesn’t help that the greatest ambition of our oak tree is to be an Alaskan snow cloud.

22 thirty-gallon bags later. . .

Survival Pumpkin: February Jack-o-Lantern | Posted by benjamin on 07 Mar 2010
Pics: FebruaryvJack-o-Lantern

This one was purchased in late September 2009 for Carter, but somehow we never got around to carving it. We opened it up Feb 23, 2010. It was 99.9% clean on the inside, and still moist, though some cracks were starting to appear in the inside that weren’t visible on the outside. Maybe we should have used it to store our wheat.

Carter and Eve wanted different faces so I had them both draw what they wanted on little scraps of paper. I’ve posted the photos of their creations, or at least how I carved them into the pumpkin. Eve had a little help in the design phase, but the idea was all her own. Can you guess which kid goes with which face?

Now the Pumpkin is in our contraband compost pile. When I poked it yesterday with the shovel, I disturbed a couple of lizards that had taken up residence there, for the swarming fruit flies, no doubt.
