still on planet earth. . .i think | Posted by alisha on 25 Jun 2010
****DISCLAIMER******
tonight you get words not pictures.
at many points in writing this i debated not actually posting, just "getting it out" and then deleting the file. but i think, maybe, i will want to be able to look back on all this and remeber how i really felt. so if you don't want to read my icky sticky feelings on the subject of moving, don't bother continuing. it's not very pretty.

wow. it is amazing that a person can live in many different places, and travel to many more and still feel a bit like they've fallen off the face of Mother Earth when they go and do a little thing like move to Texas. uh, that person would be me.

over a week ago we were scurrying around utah, working on house projects and packing far into the wee hours of the morning. life was crazy, but i had no idea what was coming.

mom and i began "the long drive" with all the kidlets and had to stop so often that ed and my dad (driving the moving van, and many farm animals) caught up to us, even though they left 24 hrs after us. driving with kids is SLOW. wow.

we arrived at our new home at 1:30am. it looked quite welcoming, driving through the woods to see a home with lights on, waiting for us. and then we walked inside. at first i was a bit mesmerized with the change some paint and a new floor can work. it was very nice.

then i saw that the kitchen was not even close to ready (as in, no sink or cabinets and the appliances were not in working order) unfinished wires were sticking out of the walls and there was no hot water.

then we looked down. uhhhhhh. the floor was covered in millipedes and i freaked. we spent almost an hour sweeping and vacuuming up the bugs and then sent my parents and our girls to sleep in a hotel "in town" (this is the term i'm using now for the 20min drive into the nearest little town).

ed and i couldn't sleep. we unloaded our mattress and little dude's crib and sat up talking for a few hours. we listened to the cicadas and the coyotes, and gazed at the blanket of stars above the trees. around 9am the work crew showed up and started work again.

fast forward to today - we now have hot water, a kitchen sink, a few appliances that work (ed is wrangling the washer as we speak) wires are still hanging out, boxes are everywhere, since i have no finished rooms to put things in.

i have to stand in the rain, on my front porch (or down the drive, depending on the cell phone) to get decent reception. let's just say the Relief Society sisters who have brought dinner every night this week are truly living up to their name. RELIEF.

this is a different world. somehow, i knew that, and yet, had no idea. The bugs (and do i mean, BUGS), the humidity, the "middle-of-nowhere country", the lack of internet and phone, it's unnerving. :) oh! and my library card should only cost about $400-500 (after i get the car safety inspections done, cars registered, driver licenses transferred, and all fees payed i am assured i can then check out some books at the local library).

on a good note, the woods are beautiful, the house will be beautiful (someday, not sure when, maybe we need another 6 years. . . ), the people are nice. I got to pick blueberries with robin, emily and the kidlets. a whole gallon for only $10 and my painter brought me gallon of FRESH milk (not skimmed!) for free today. he said he'd only charge me $3/gallon from here on out. oh yeah, and a random guy in a wal-mart parking lot sold me produce from his garden. yum. did you know they are already harvesting tomatoes and zucchini out here? crazy.

Another gal here just moved from the west and we hit it off. she cans, bakes from scratch, loves blogs, and understands how much i miss Macey's grocery. i can tell she is a kindred spirit.

here is the long and short of it. we are meant to be here. we know that. we will continue to encounter bumps and such, but this will be a good thing. i'm sure.

A Reason not to Like Fish | Posted by ed on 09 Jun 2010
Nana, Elena, and Isabel were having a conversation about mosquitoes this evening and I eavesdropped as I worked on a house project. The part of the conversation I heard went something like this:

Nana: "only girl mosquitoes suck your blood..."
Isabel: "do the boy mosquitoes eat the girl mosquitoes?"

... a little later ...

Nana: "do you know what type of animal eats a lot of mosquitoes? FISH!"
Nana: "mosquitoes are the main source of food for many different kinds of fish"
Elena: "Does that mean when you eat fish you are eating your own blood?"

That's my girl--connecting the dots to find another reason not to like fish :).

How to Eat a Watermelon | Posted by alisha on 16 May 2010
Pics: Watermelon Day

Moving is hard. Ed and i have spent weeks in the attic (and my dear mother has spent hours there too) sorting and packing and cleaning and. . . and i'm tired. Yesterday we spent the whole day working on packing and sorting and such. by dinner time, we were sick of it. the kids had been amazingly well behaved all day, so we cooked up some hot dogs and cut open a yummy watermelon.

Holland was unsure how best to consume such a large treat - so Ed took him on his lap and demonstrated how fun it is to eat watermelon. Then he taught the girls how to spit seeds at each other - it got a little crazy.

to top it all off, we decided to get some ice cream and head to the park. what a fun night!
