The Itsy Bitsy ...

I've been watching a pair of Argiope aurantias (garden spiders or banana spiders for those non-scientists out there) through my window the past couple weeks. They are both growing quickly--the one in the photo is at least three inches long from the tip of the front legs to the tip of the back legs (no I didn't actually measure).

Today for a quick break, I ran out and took a couple pictures with Alisha's portrait lens.

I'm sure many of you will disagree with me about whether spiders are the sort of thing that deserve a portrait. However, after looking at the photos, I learned something new about garden spiders. If you look at the top of the picture, you will see a bit of silk running out from the spider's abdomen and back to the web.

Apparently, garden spiders use a safety line even when they are running around on their webs! You'll also notice the insect she's eating has two threads running back to the web.

I'll let you puzzle out the spiritual meaning in that :).

catching up

although we have limited internet, it is not non-existent. i'm sorry i haven't been chronicling this adventure thoroughly enough - so here's a little catch up:

- tonight we spent our evening with a family in the ward. they invited us over to pick peaches (for canning! yeah!). and we spent the evening checking out all their cool chickens, dogs. frogs, and horses. the girls of course, loved the horses the best. especially the ride they took on a sweet mare named . . . cerita. :)

elena said on the way home that she was "tired but content". we also saw at least 30 deer (and fawns) on our way home and some lightening bugs. it was a good day.

-of course, when we got home ed squashed the 4th scorpion IN our house. ugh. i may throw out all my principles and start gettin the bug spray. does that even work on scorpions? mostly i'm scared for my kids. dang, i can't even type about it without getting creeped out. . .

-the kitchen is coming together. all the doors and drawers are in. i just have to finish putting things away. i'm still in a bit of pickle finding storage space in this house. any ideas for making more space? it's mostly 5 gal buckets and large plastic totes. maybe i could make furniture? . . .

-little dude is beginning to imitate his sisters. it's especially cute when he toddles around their room in the evening, brushing his teeth just like them.

-ed pointed out a HUGE garden spider that just made it's home outside his office window. he of course, thinks it's awesome. i pray the monster stays outside.

-ed's been working a lot clearing paths and cleaning out underbrush near the back of our home. he's got big plans and i'll share them as soon as he's ready (pretty sure this week).

-today i wanted to make bread. we've discovered that fresh buttermilk makes some pretty perfect bread. so i had to skim the milk to get a quart of cream; then churn the cream until it separated into butter and buttermilk; squeeze all the buttermilk out of the butter; then salt and lightly knead the butter; use the buttermilk in my bread dough; raise the dough; bake dough (do i sound like the little red hen? at least i didn't have to raise the wheat!).

but the cool part is, that i loved it! and the bread was amazing! especially with the fresh butter on it and some local honey. yum.

-i know there are other stories to tell but i'm too tired to keep going tonight :) so enjoy the pictures and i'll try to haul my camera around more this week!

Just a big thank you to all the hewetts who made an effort to come out this weekend. we had a blast and now the house feels so very empty. We loved the good company, the laughs and even the bumps. We love you; and of course we love all those who couldn't make it - we'll save a bed for you next time :)

pictures to follow. . .
